Description

There are at least three physical locations where the ORC hardware can sit: B5600 R-A222 (with Ahern's NSF vis equipment and Ga Tech hardware), JICS, or a machine room at UTK. From a network topology perspective, the computers could sit on the ORNL network or on the UTK network. UTK is more likely, particularly given ORNL network attachment charges. For 0.3, the location is not so much an issue, but this should be resolved for the 0.5 deployment.

History

#1 Updated by Bruce Wilson almost 14 years ago

The plan is to move the system into the UTK network in the JICS building on campus at ORNL. This moves the system out of the ORNL security enclaves into the relatively uncontrolled environment of UTK's network. There have been some problems with UTK's network at ORNL, but there is now a full-time person at ORNL (Nathan Mendoza) charged with ensuring reliability (among other things). Higher profile projects (including Kraken and the Visualization system) are also reliant on the UTK network at ORNL, so the risks of network reliability are smaller than they would have been. Further, since we are not production at this point, the consequences of occasional network problems are not as severe as they will be later. This decision will be revisited in approximately 6 months, to see if there are problems and if another option is appropriate.
